I received a copy of No Tomorrow from the publisher via Netgalley. There is great wit and humour here (I loved Eve’s dinner party from hell, haven’t we all had one of those?) There is also a ratcheting up of the tension as the dynamic between Eve and Villanelle is beautifully played out.įinally, there is a fantastic twist which means that if there is to be another book (and I really hope there is) the story will have to take a whole new direction. Meanwhile, Eve’s pursuit of Villanelle is exposing her to a world of luxury and influence, quite different from her cosy marriage and her even cosier flat. Villanelle, previously portrayed as an invulnerable sociopath, is now showing signs of becoming emotionally involved in her work. But I think what gives this book the edge is the arc of the characters. It continues the story of Villanelle, a glamorous and ruthless Russian assassin in the pay of a mysterious organisation, and Eve, the MI5 operative who is trying to track her down. I enjoyed Codename Villanelle but for me No Tomorrow, the second in the series that inspired the TV drama Killing Eve, is even better.

5/13/2023 0 Comments The collapsing empire seriesI’m not saying that you’ll fully understand each and every family in the Interdependency, but you honestly don’t need to. There are more complex systems beyond the nature of the Flow at work in Collapsing Empire, but those get slightly more explanation. The narrator actually acknowledges lots of things in-text, and it helps keep things snappy and moving right along. In fact, the narrator acknowledges this in the text. I don’t mean tight in the sense of “cool,” if anyone actually uses tight that way anymore anyway, but I do mean it in the sense of “there’s not a lot of room here.” Scalzi, however, seems to know this, and he doesn’t waste pages trying to explain the complexity of the Flow, a series of paths that connect the far-flung pieces of the Interdependency, the aforementioned space empire. I’ll get to that more later, but I give the book a very solid 4/5 stars. However, this relatively small page count actually works to the benefit of The Collapsing Empire on the whole. No, not the epilogue, the acknowledgements. Anyway, Empire isn’t really that big, and it really isn’t that thick, either. No matter what the saying says, we all do it. I’m not talking about the first pages, but I’m about to judge a book by its cover. On first impression, John Scalzi’s The Collapsing Empire doesn’t look like much. By Cheryl Wassenaar 6 years ago John Scalzi’s latest, The Collapsing Empire, is a fast-paced and clever take on the garden variety space empire, and we look forward to more. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Spy... for Nobody! by Basel SaneebThis book is very interesting and strange. wonderful, distinct, different, the story is very strange and exciting. There were months where I was stewing in my anger at how things were done and what people were doing in my community that I felt was wrong or misguided. There were times where I was hurt - and caused hurt - to others in the church community I belonged to. And I'm grateful for the friends and mentors God has placed around me who have provided godly counsel and friendship, especially during times of confusion and distress.īut if I am to be completely honest, there are some parts of me that dislike Christian community, that shy away from fully participating and being a part of it. One of my biggest convictions since becoming a believer is that I need Christian community in my life.īecause of my community, I've grown so much in my faith, and I've enjoyed countless opportunities to serve God and serve each other. The story is simple yet effective though some have criticised the twists as being unrealistic especially given our hero is a detective, not your average bobby on the beat. His relationship with his love interest – and senior officer – DI Templar blends personal and professional life without falling foul of the ‘lover in peril’ template that has blighted the police procedural genre for many years. Stealing food from his local convenience store and being related to a brother who is on the dark side of shady, Rebus has his quirks but Rankin is artful in his ability to play to these quirks whilst not overplaying the point. He still ticks a few of those boxes but his backstory – being a part of the SAS and the subsequent trauma he lived through – added a further dimension to his character and allowed the story to flow smoothly. Rebus is unique in a universe of alcohol abusing, divorced police officers. With the help of lover Detective Inspector Templar and his brother Michael, John tries to find the killer before he strikes closer to home. Meanwhile John’s world is thrown into turmoil when his personal life collides with the horrific case of the strangled girls. He suspects that his brother John, a police officer, knows or even supports his brother’s illegal activities. Journalist Jim Stevens runs his own investigation, and has uncovered Michael Rebus’s drug dealing. Edinburgh has been shocked by the abduction and subsequent strangling of two young girls. And despite a reluctant muse and a strange buzzing and recurring pain in his head, he must finish composing his symphony before the grand opening of the city's new symphony hall. Nationally acclaimed conductor Nathaniel Tate Whitcomb is Nashville's youngest orchestra leader. To make matters worse, Adelicia Cheatham, mistress of Belmont Mansion and Rebekah's new employer, agrees with him. But women are "far too fragile and frail" for the rigors of an orchestra, and Rebekah's hopes are swiftly dashed when the conductor-determined to leave his mark on the world of classical music-bows to public opinion. From Bestselling Author Tamera Alexander Comes the Final Novel in the Sweeping Belmont Mansion Series A master violinist trained in Vienna, Rebekah Carrington manages to wheedle her way into an audition with the new maestro at the Nashville Philharmonic. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Steinbeck the moon is downAlthough the first merely describes, what could happen when an invading army proclaims “mission accomplished” prematurely because of undemocratic and inhumane oppression and the second focuses on a humanistic approach towards invasion from a more democratic point of view, both can be considered novels of war propaganda. And we come to the conclusion that Roiben doesn’t want Kaye entangled with the courts, but of course because she loves him she wants to throw her lot in with his. And of course, she spends much of the book questioning why doesn’t he give her an easy quest. As said, in order to be his consort, she has to complete the quest. There is a complex relationship between Kaye and Roiben. And well, I am always down for a good battle of wits, unless it’s against a Sicilian, I never want to go against one when death is on the line. Especially when a battle of wits ensues between her and Silarial. It is one of my favorite storylines, whether people are looking for Horcruxes or dropping a ring off of Mount Doom, I LOVE QUESTS. What I loved especially was the quest aspect. And you all should know by now that I love swears. I actually liked Ironside better than Tithe. |
